Patent 2021 – “Maracas” structure: light and resistant anti-theft device
Three dimensional hierarchical porous architecture composed of a lattice-like structure with
embedded floating inserts
Inventors: Federico Caviggioli, Flaviana Calignano, Manuela Galati
N: 102021000024641

The hierarchical material is characterised by a porous lattice structure with floating spherical inserts. It is obtained through a process of additive manufacturing such as Directed Energy Deposition, Powder Bed Fusion, Selective Laser Melting. The material of the structure and the inserts can be of different types: e.g. stainless steel, cobalt-chromium alloys, aluminium alloys, nickel alloys or titanium alloys. The application of this structure in U-locks provides with a lighter weight and a high resistance to cutting with respect to the same version with no porosity.

Possible applications
- U-locks
- Anti-theft systems for bikes and motorbikes
Advantages
- Light weight
- Less material
- Same resistance to cutting
